Ouch! No dub? No worries.

Momo dubs the episode you're watching into English, live.

Momotako is a Chrome extension with a small Mac helper. It reads a show's subtitles a moment ahead and speaks them in natural English voices while you watch. Momo works right here on your Mac.

Momo shows you how

A quick tour of the extension: press Start, watch it dub, and find your way around voices, characters and the sound mix.

Captions are part of the picture. Everything shown is a made-up example; no real show is used.

A line, a moment later, in English

The subtitle appears in the player. Momotako already read it, cast a voice, and speaks it while the original audio ducks underneath. If it falls behind, it catches up on the next line.

Placeholder lines. Momotako works with the subtitles of what you're already watching; it never ships or shows any show.

Three steps, no setup each time

  1. 1

Open an episode with subtitles on

On a streaming site whose player shows subtitles, turn them on: English, or Japanese with Standard.

  2. 2

    Press Start in the extension

Open Momotako from Chrome's toolbar. The first time, the voices take about 40 seconds to wake up on your Mac. After that they're ready when you are.

  3. 3

    Hear it in English

Each line is spoken a moment after it appears, in the voice cast for that character. Press Stop whenever you like; the original audio comes right back.

Nothing is uploaded.

The voices run on your own Mac, and so does the Japanese translation. The subtitles, the audio and your character names stay on your machine.

  • The English voices are generated on your Mac, on the Apple silicon chip. No server is involved.
  • Japanese subtitles are translated on your Mac too. Nothing is sent anywhere to be translated.
  • The dub itself needs no account. The beta download only asks for an email, so we can tell you about updates.

One steady voice, or a whole cast

Pick one voice for every line, or let Momotako cast each character from the subtitles' speaker names. Eight arms, up to eight voices at once. Lower and higher voice styles are just that: styles of the English voice, not a claim about the character.

Voice Hero Girl Per character

Other voices: Hero, Kid, Steady, Tough, Elder, Villain, Girl, Bright, Strong, Young, Lady. Your pick for a character lasts until Chrome closes.

Light, Standard or Expert

Both dub from the subtitles the player already shows. Standard adds a translator for Japanese subtitles, so it can dub an episode that has no English subtitles at all. Expert has the biggest bag of tricks: it dubs on many sites with a standard video player (we've tested Crunchyroll end to end), and when there are no subtitles at all, Momo listens to the Japanese instead.

Macs share memory between the chip and the graphics, so there's no separate video memory (VRAM) to check. Any Apple silicon Mac with 8 GB runs Light; Standard wants 16 GB. Expert needs at least 16 GB and about 35 GB of free disk space to install. During the beta there is nothing to buy.

Momotako isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Crunchyroll or any other video site.

How we handle your email
  • Your email lives in our own Cloudflare account and with Buttondown, the little service that sends our beta emails. We only use it for beta news.
  • You’ll get one quick email to say hi and confirm it’s really you.
  • Every email has a one-click unsubscribe. To have your email deleted, write to [email protected].
  • To stop spam, we keep a scrambled one-way code of your network address for 24 hours, then delete it.
  • If you came from one of our links (say, on X), we note its short tag, like “x/bio”, so we know which posts help. Your browser holds that tag only until you close the tab.
  • We count visits with Cloudflare’s cookieless analytics, and count downloads per day. Neither knows who you are.
  • No ad trackers, no selling, and this page sets no cookies.

Questions

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac with Apple silicon: M1 or later. Intel Macs can't run the voices fast enough, so they're not supported. You also need Google Chrome.

Which sites work?

Right now, Crunchyroll in Google Chrome. That's the one we've tested end to end. We're adding more, and the extension tells you on each page whether it can read the subtitles there.

Is it free?

Light and Standard are free. Expert is coming soon for a one-time US$59 (founding price for the first 250 licenses sold), then US$89. There's nothing to buy yet.

Does it upload anything?

No. The voices and the translation run on your Mac. Nothing about what you watch leaves your machine.
