The short version

The Momotako Chrome extension

The extension has one job: it dubs the episode you're watching into English, with voices that run on your Mac. Here's everything it touches, one piece at a time.

The tab's sound

When you press Start, Momo listens to the sound of that one tab (Chrome's tab capture). That's how the English lines land at the right moment, and how Auto voices choose voices (see below). The sound goes straight to the Momotako app on this Mac, over a private connection inside your computer. It's used as it plays, held in memory only, and isn't saved. Listening ends when you press Stop or close the tab.

How Auto voices choose

When Auto is on, the Momotako app measures a few things about how each line's voice sounds: its pitch, its tone (timbre) and how big the voice sounds. It compares each line with earlier ones, so lines that sound alike form unnamed groups for the episode you're watching (“group 1”, “group 2” and so on). Each group then gets one of our stock English voices, lower or higher, and keeps it for the episode. These measurements are numbers held in memory on your Mac. They're cleared when the episode changes or the dub stops, and they're never sent anywhere or used to name or recognise anyone. The voice Auto picks is a style for the English voice, not a claim about the character or the actor. The app's own log on your Mac keeps only numbers, such as each line's average pitch and which voice spoke it, and never audio or words. To skip Auto, choose one voice for every line or pick a voice for each character.

Subtitles

During a dub, the extension re-reads the subtitle file the video player already loaded (on Crunchyroll, the English or Japanese subtitles) and hands the upcoming lines to the Momotako app on your Mac, which speaks them. With Standard, the app also translates Japanese lines, right there on your Mac. The lines are held in memory and aren't saved.

The page address

The extension looks at the address of the tab you start on, to check it's a page it can dub and to follow along to the next episode. That check happens right here on your Mac; the address isn't saved or sent anywhere.

Your settings

Your choices (voices, volume and so on) are saved in Chrome's own storage on your computer. A short status list of numbers and labels, which shows what Momo is up to, is kept for the browser session only. Removing the extension clears all of it.

The Momotako Mac app

The extension starts the Momotako Mac app and talks to it through Chrome's native messaging, which reaches only apps installed on this Mac. The free app works offline and talks only to the extension. Expert's app also checks its license key with momotako.com, as described under Buying Momotako Expert.

The daily update check

In the beta from momotako.com, once a day (and whenever you press Check now), the extension reads one small public file, momotako.com/latest.json, that says the newest version of the Mac app. It sends nothing about you or what you watch, and no cookies. Like any website, our host Cloudflare sees the request's network address so it can answer. You can turn this off in the extension's Settings, under Updates. The Chrome Web Store version skips this check, because Chrome keeps it up to date for you.

The welcome page

Right after you first add the extension, it opens one tab: our welcome page, momotako.com/welcome, with setup tips. That visit adds 1 to a daily count of installs, and the extension remembers it's been shown, so it opens just once. The welcome page and the update check above are the only things the extension opens or sends on its own. Expert adds the license check described below.

Code

Everything the extension runs ships inside it: no remote code, and no ads or analytics.

Link tags

If you came from one of our links (say, on X), the page notes its short tag, like “x/bio”, so we know which posts help. Your browser holds that tag only until you close the tab, and it's saved only if you sign up.

Buying Momotako Expert

Expert is coming soon and isn't on sale yet. Once it is, here's what buying it involves.

Checkout, by Paddle

Paddle, our reseller, runs the checkout. Paddle collects your name, email, payment details and country, so it can take the payment, work out sales tax and send your receipt, under Paddle's own privacy notice. Your card details stay with Paddle. Paddle tells us your email, country, what you bought and your order number, so we can send your license key and help you.

Private Expert testers

If we've sent you a private Expert test link, opening it sets one cookie, mtk_expert, so your browser can download Expert. It holds only a scrambled code of the test key, is sent only to momotako.com/download/, can't be read by pages or scripts, and lasts 90 days.
